Barry Ward:"I first rode a motorcycle at the age of 7, built for me by my father, a cut down 50cc Mobylette moped. I was hooked, and have ridden bikes ever since; road bikes to & from work everyday & off road sport, with trials, motocross, enduro, & sidecar road racing.
I studies Mechanical Engineering at Reading University in the late 1980's with the intention of finding work in the motorcycle industry. I soon discovered that there wasn't one in the UK anymore, so ended up shifting my focus to 4 wheel motorsport, and did several university projects with a motorsport theme.
I left University and started a job at Reynard Motorsport, as a graduate trainee, spending time in every department, learning the trade of race car design & manufacture. I became a permanent member of the design team, and spend several years specializing in transmission design on the F3000 & Indycar projects. I ended up as Chief Designer on the Indycar project, with our designs winning many races & championships.
Reynard Motorsport closed its doors in 2002, and I finally found my childhood dream job in 2 wheeled motorsport, with the Kenny Roberts MotoGP team, helping to design their new V5 gearbox & engine casings. After a couple of years I had become Chief Designer on the MotoGP program overseeing the design team on the whole machine.
With the help of some great race engineering staff and Kenny Jr as the rider, we managed to develop the KR Honda V5 powered bike to several front row starts & podiums. KRJr even led a race for a lap or two, which was great considering we were using a customer V5 engine, racing against the factory Hondas, with works motors etc.
Even with this success, it was becoming harder & harder for Kenny & his staff to find healthy sponsorship to keep the team alive, so we started looking elsewhere to bring in some money. We started designing & selling KR swingarms, linkage kits, throttle kicker units and other development parts to BSB & WSBK teams, such as PBM & Ten Kate. Whilst this proved successful, it was not enough income to save the company, so in 2008 Kenny shut the factory and stopped racing.
This is where GPMS Technology started - we continued the design, development & manufacture of BSB & WSBK components, run from a small unit on Silverstone Circuit, still supplying PBM & Ten Kate with their chassis components, plus a few other customer we have picked up & supported along the way.
We aim to provide a high specification product, tailored exactly to the needs of each customer. So in the case of swingarms, our main product, we will tailor the stiffness & geometry to suit each team. An example of this is the new 2013 CBR1000 swingarm developed specifically for Ten Kate. It is a new 'Upside down' design (The standard CBR1000 has a 'right way up' style arm) This was at Ten Kate's request, to push the development of the CBR as far as possible - allowing for a repackaging of various other components of the machine as the season progresses.
The products & services we provide are:
Swingarms, linkages, adjustable head angle kits, adjustable swingarm pivot kits, throttle kickers, ride by wire units, chassis modifications, chassis & swingarm stiffness testing, geometry analysis, bodywork design, FEA stress analysis, CFD aerodynamic analysis - in fact we can analyse, design & supply pretty much the whole motorcycle....
...So when PBM moved into MotoGP and wanted to build their own chassis for the Aprilia motor, we we in an ideal position to be their technical partner. We have designed & built their PBM CRT frames & swingarms, and various other components for this new project, under the guidance of Phil Borley at PBM.
An exciting project for both GPMS & PBM, and hopefully we'll be able to develop the product into something that Michael can head the CRT class with."
