Et plus spécialement pour les side-caristes:

While researching ‘Enterprise on the Edge’, I found in the darkest corner of the TV cabinet a VHS tape of the 1953 and 1955 Belgian Grand Prix, with their original commentaries. A shortened version of the 1953 film was used as part of a Castrol film entitled ‘On the Surface’ but not with this commentary, rather with another commentary that spoke to the title of the film. DUKE Video have over the years done a great service by publishing a number of films of sidecar racing in the 1950s, such as the 1953 and 1956 Ulster Grand Prix as a part of videos telling particular stories. Insofar as my two films are concerned, however, I cannot remember seeing these films before, and nor can I recall how I came by the VHS tape or who gave it to me.
Mark and I felt the contents were simply too good to leave under the telly, particularly since they helped us considerably in telling the Cyril Smith story - one of the most important chapters in our book; detailed analysis of the '55 race can be found in the book. Further, the 1953 footage shows solo and sidecar practice, including Ray Amm on the kneeler solo Norton, as well as the first ever fully streamlined kneeler sidecar in colour; Eric Oliver and I practiced with it at Spa. Since this machine is the forerunner to all racing sidecars seen today, it is a genuine piece of history in itself. The genius Watsonian Sidecars designer Ben Willets is in there too, catching a lift with Eric and I !!
Indeed, taken together the two films speak to the transition from single-cylinder to multi-cylinder in Grand Prix racing, and also show the shift from unfaired outfits to full streamliners. Finally, right at the very end, there is the wonderful Inge Stoll, who rode the 1953 kneeler streamliner to third place with driver Jacques Drion in the Italian Grand Prix that year. And I've just realised she and Jacques are filmed on the grid for the 53 race too, at just after 2 mins. They were good friends of ours, an excellent sidecar team much missed. So, all in all, the contribution to knowledge the films make is such that we have decided to post them; we apologise for any unwitting breach of copyright in so doing.
