Round thirteen of the 2012 season takes place at the recently renamed Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli as MotoGP
action returns to the Italian peninsula for the second time this year.
Misano is just over four kilometres in length with a tight, stop-and-go layout, with the most challenging part of the circuit being the section from turns eleven to fourteen, starting with the flat-out Curvone which sweeps into progressively tighter right-hand corners that demand maximum commitment from the riders.
Overall, Misano is not overly demanding on tyres though great care needs to be taken in selecting compounds that provide the best combination of grip, durability and heat-resistance as tyres spend a lot of time at large lean angles at this circuit. With ten right-hand turns compared to just six left-hand turns, asymmetric slicks with slightly harder rubber on the right shoulder were introduced last year at Misano and will once again be supplied this weekend in the medium and hard compounds. Front slick options for the San Marino and Rimini Grand Prix are the soft, medium and hard compounds.
Hiroshi Yamada - Manager, Bridgestone Motorsport Department
“This weekend’s San Marino and Rimini Grand Prix is an important race on many different levels. First of all, this is the first MotoGP race at the circuit since it was renamed to honour Marco Simoncelli and so this weekend will be one of mixed emotions. Also, as this circuit is very close to the homes of many of the Italian MotoGP stars, it carries with it an intense atmosphere as it is the last chance this year the local fans will get to see their heroes on track. This Sunday’s race also marks a significant breakthrough for Bridgestone as when the race winner takes the checkered flag, we will have shared in our one hundredth MotoGP victory and many key members of Bridgestone management will be attending this weekend to help celebrate this occasion.
“As for the race itself, the championship battle between Jorge and Dani is delicately poised so there will be great anticipation to see who will take the initiative at a circuit where it is not easy to overtake. I would also like to make special mention of Jonathan Rea who will make his MotoGP debut this weekend riding for the Repsol Honda team.”
Shinji Aoki - Manager, Bridgestone Motorsport Tyre Development Department
“The tarmac of the Misano circuit is smoothly textured and offers only modest grip and as September on the Adriatic coast can be quite warm, our compound selection needs to find the best balance between grip, abrasion resistance and resistance to high temperatures. With this in mind, we will supply the same tyre compounds at Misano as last year, with the soft, medium and hard compounds for the front, and the medium and hard compounds for the rear. Last year was the first time we made asymmetric rear slicks available at Misano and we will continue supplying this specification this weekend, with the right shoulder of the tyre slightly harder rubber than the left side.
“The most demanding section of the Misano circuit for tyres is the fast right-handed Curvone corner. This is where the tyres, particularly the rears, reach their highest temperature as they spend a lot of time leant over and don’t have much time to dissipate the heat generated in corners. The high speed nature of the Curvone and the frequent braking zones at Misano also require high levels of stability, especially at the front-end, so the centre section of the tyres needs to provide riders with maximum confidence in this area.”
Dunlop set for Adriatic adventure
Dunlop’s Moto2 tyres head to the seaside for their second visit to Italy this year with the GP Aperol di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini – San Marino Grand Prix – at the Misano Adriático circuit on September 14–16.
Smooth Italian
A smooth circuit surface allied to a twisty layout over its 4.226km clockwise duration with likely high ambient and track temperatures give Misano its own distinct flavour.
Misano returned to the MotoGP calendar in 2007 after being a previous regular as the venue of Italian Grand Prix throughout the 1980s and early 90s. This season Misano is the thirteenth round of the season.
Base Jumping
A tyre allocation combination of the 3757 and the 3854 soft compounds will be employed in Misano. This tyre allocation is Dunlop’s baseline Group A allocation, which can be utilised in a wide range of conditions at many different circuits.
The 3757 was initially introduced as the high ambient temperature tyre in late 2010, however it proved itself more durable in cooler conditions on less aggressive circuit surfaces too so is rather a talented compound. The 3854 is the softer option core compound offering very consistent performance and usability at many circuits as a soft or hard option, depending on circuit severity.
Both rear tyres are in the ATR05 construction and are joined by the season-familiar front allocation of the 717 and 302 compounds.
Dunlop’s Moto2 Operations Manager, Clinton Howe:
“Misano is a fantastic circuit in a superb location and it is always a pleasure to visit Italy. The weather is usually fantastic, and to get the very best from the Dunlop tyres this circuit needs to be between 34°C – 40°C in track temperature, as lower temperatures create higher than normal abrasion levels, whereas the higher the temperature the less grip is given from the track surface. Our allocation of rear tyres should give optimum performance whatever the conditions. 2010 showed us that the cooler the conditions the harder worked the tyres were and consistency suffered. For 2011 this event was the first time we introduced the ATR05 construction and 3854 compound combination which effectively reduced the race time by 27 seconds over the 2010 race. This year we have brought in a new front tyre profile and this could see the lap times fall again.”
Moto2 Rider Quote: Alex de Angelis, NGM Mobile Forward Racing, FTR:
“Misano as well as being my home circuit, is one of my favourite tracks so it’s always very exciting racing it. It’s a very complete track, with a slow initial part with a lot of right/left , while the second part is very fast especially regarding the famous “Curvone ” ( means big corner ) where we ride more than 240 km/h and from the last two left corner , also with a very wide range. Dunlop tyres was really good both for one single lap both for the complete race performance. These tyres reached an high level standard that allow us to be fast on every track/asphalt of the circus. Besides this, I hope I could be one of the top protagonists this coming weekend.”
