Bridgestone slick compounds available: Front: Soft, Medium. Rear: Medium, Hard (Asymmetric)
Bridgestone wet tyre compounds available: Soft (Main), Hard (Alternative) The final race of the 2012 MotoGP
season sees the paddock descend on Valencia’s Circuit Ricardo Tormo as the home fans get to greet their World Champion, Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo after the Spaniard clinched the title at the previous round.
Valencia is a tight and technical circuit that offers tyres little respite over the course of a lap, so a good bike setup is very important to ensure the most efficient use of the tyres allocated for this Grand Prix. The layout of the circuit means more stress is placed on the left shoulder of the tyres, and an unbalanced bike setup can cause excessive rear tyre temperatures which can lead to a loss of performance and accelerated tyre wear.
To manage the unbalanced layout and the moderate track temperatures the asymmetric rear slicks at Valencia feature rubber on the left shoulder that is two grades harder than on the right side. This ensures the lesser-used right shoulder of the rear tyre stays in its ideal operating temperature window and that the left shoulder provides the durability and stability needed for the many left hand turns. Additionally, the front slick compounds allocated for this weekend need to provide enhanced warm-up performance and grip in the temperate weather.
The main wet tyre for the Valencia Grand Prix is the soft compound option, with all riders also having access to a maximum of two front and rear wet tyres in the alternative hard compound option.
Hiroshi Yamada - Manager, Bridgestone Motorsport Department
“It is fitting that the last race of the year is in Valencia as it will give the Spanish fans a chance to welcome home their MotoGP World Champion Jorge Lorenzo after he claimed his second title at Phillip Island. With the championship battle now over, the main motivation for riders this weekend is to end the season on a high with a victory.
“After the last race of the season the annual post-season test will commence on Tuesday at the Valencia circuit, providing many of the riders that are stepping up to the premier class next year their first experience with Bridgestone MotoGP tyres. Our technical team will be on hand to assist the riders and teams during this very important time and we will also have some experimental tyres at this test for riders to evaluate as part of our development programme for the 2013 season.”
Shinji Aoki - Manager, Bridgestone Motorsport Tyre Development Department
“Valencia is the traditional venue for the season finale and is a slow, tight circuit with nine left-hand and five right-hand corners. The frequency of corners at the circuit means bikes spend a lot of time leaned over, so there is not much time during a lap for heat to dissipate from the tyre shoulders meaning excessive rear tyre temperatures are possible if a bike’s setup isn’t optimised. Considering this potential for high tyre temperatures in the left shoulder and also the need for good temperature retention in the right shoulder due to the possibility of cooler weather, we provide asymmetric rear slicks at Valencia with substantially harder rubber on the left shoulder compared to the right.”

Resurfaced Valencia to Challenge Dunlop and ChampionsTwo new Dunlop Champions, a new track surface and a revised tyre allocation are the headlines as Dunlop returns to Spain for the season finales of the Moto2 and Moto3 World Championships, the Gran Premio Generali de la Comunitat Valenciana.
The Circuito de la Comunitat Valenciana offers a new track surface for the seventeenth event of the year, meaning Dunlop expects an aggressive welcome to its rubber compounds, for which a harder Moto2 allocation is offered in retort.
Two new Dunlop Champions will take to the track for the event from November 9-11, with Marc Marquez taking the Moto2 title in Phillip Island, following on from Sandro Cortese achieving Moto3 glory in Sepang.
A New Surface
The 4km Circuito de la Comunitat Valenciana offers nine left hand turns and five right handers. Running anti-clockwise with a 650m straight, it offers the many and numerous spectators who attend superb viewing due to its nature. Due to having been recently resurfaced for the first time since the circuit was opened in 1999, Dunlop will bring the Group D Grip Focused allocation of the 4886 medium and 3838 hard compounds.
The 4886 holds temperature well to compensate for long straight tyre cooling and has good mechanical grip in slow corner, whereas the 3838 as the harder option core compound gives riders the confidence to open the throttle early out of the apex. Both compounds have good durability and the 4886 also appears in the Abrasion Defenders grouping.
At the front, it’s a return to the fold for the 717 harder front compound which re-joins the 302 after the 345 stood in for the 717 in the previous three races.
17,000 tyres and counting
By the time this event has finished Dunlop would have supplied and fitted over 17,000 tyres in 2012 within the Moto2 and Moto3 classes combined.
No Rest for the Wicked: Monday Test
End of season celebrations on the Sunday night following the event will be tempered by the knowledge that – weather permitting – Monday will see an IRTA test at the circuit where Dunlop will unleash some developmental 2013 tyres. The advantage of testing immediately after the MotoGP is that the circuit is well rubbered, and riders and engineers are all well versed on what is working and where they want to see improvements.
Dunlop’s MotoGP Operations Manager, Clinton Howe:
“Firstly, we must say congratulations to Marc and all of his team for winning the 2012 Moto2 World Championship in such fine form in Phillip Island. Marc was the bookies’ favourite right from the start of the 2012 season, but what the bookies didn’t take into consideration was the fact of how close this championship is in terms of talent and machinery.
“Marquez has been the man to beat for sure this year, but there has been eleven other different riders who have stood on the podium with him over the last 16 races. Added to this fact, he had two no points scoring races in Le Mans and what seems to be his unlucky circuit, Sepang. This means he has had to work very hard to win eight of the seventeen rounds so far and end up on the podium thirteen times. None of the other riders can boast this.
“Marquez truly deserves this world championship, he has never broke when under pressure from the other riders and we owe him a lot of gratitude for the lap records being consistently broken over the course of the year and raising the level of the Moto2 championship. Of course he has had some great people within his team that have helped him to achieve this goal and behind every great rider there has to be a great team.
“There’s no doubt that Marc has a very good future ahead of him and if he rides like he has this year in MotoGP next year, I can see him winning races.
“Now to Valencia where there will be a new challenge for Dunlop this year due to a new track surface. High tyre abrasion and degradation could be a factor we have not had to deal with since the circuit was opened in 1999. Generally we see faster times set on new circuit surfaces, so maybe we can expect to see another track where the lap record is broken in Moto2.
“Post-race, on Monday, there will be a one day test for Moto2 machinery, so the Dunlop service will be staying put for that day and will use this valuable test day to test some of the new ideas we have for the Moto2 tyre development programme.”
