Virages à droite: 3
Ligne droite: 700 m. / 0,435 miles
Construction: 1996

Bridgestone MotoGP™ Preview - Round 8: Sachsenring
Wednesday 10 July 2013
Bridgestone slick compounds available: Front: Soft & Hard. Rear: Soft, Medium & Hard (Asymmetric)
Bridgestone wet tyre compounds available: Soft (Main), Hard (Alternative)Round eight of the 2013 MotoGP™ season takes place at Germany’s Sachsenring; a tight yet technical circuit whose combination of abrasive tarmac and fast left-hand turns make it one the most punishing tracks for tyres.
With ten left-hand turns compared to just three right-handers, the Sachsenring is extremely punishing on the left shoulder of the tyres and is a circuit where an optimal bike setup is crucial to achieve a strong result.
The imbalance in number of left and right-hand turns at this circuit means asymmetric rear slicks are supplied. However the large variance in temperatures generated on the shoulders of the tyres due to the many successive left-hand corners means the difference in compound hardness between the left and right shoulders of the rear slicks is greater than at other circuits. As with other tracks that are deemed to be particularly harsh on tyres, all rear slicks for the German Grand Prix will be Bridgestone’s heat-resistant ‘Special Construction’ specification.
In the past, race weekends at Sachsenring have been subject to large variations in ambient temperature so the front tyre compound allocation provides an option for every track condition. The soft compound front slick will ensure superior warm-up performance in cool conditions, while the hard compound option affords maximum front-end stability for the fast sections of the circuit and better abrasion resistance when temperatures are warmer. The main wet tyre option for the German Grand Prix will be the soft compound wet tyre.
Hiroshi Yamada - Manager, Bridgestone Motorsport Department
“The German Grand Prix is an important race on the MotoGP calendar as it draws huge crowds and the tight layout of the Sachsenring has produced some dramatic races over the years. Dani has dominated this race recently and he is just one of many riders who are in top form at the moment, so the signs are promising that we will see a closely-fought contest on Sunday. We are getting close to the halfway mark of the season, and I think that the results from the next couple of races will be significant in the fight for this year’s championship title. It has been a couple of very busy weeks with the Dutch Grand Prix and then what was a successful MotoGP test in Argentina, and now I am looking forward to returning to Germany as it is an important market for Bridgestone and the local fans are very passionate about their motorcycle racing.”
Shinji Aoki - Manager, Bridgestone Motorsport Tyre Development Department
“Sachsenring is a very demanding circuit for tyres as it features long radius corners in which the bikes stay at large lean angles for long periods. In particular, the high-speed long left-handers that sweep onto the back straight and main straight generate a lot of temperature in the left shoulder of the rears. To meet the demands of this circuit, asymmetric rear slicks with much harder rubber compounds on the left shoulder are provided at this circuit, while the softer compounds on the right shoulder help retain tyre temperature for maximum safety in the slow right-handers. Our front tyre options will ensure good warm-up and grip for the cool morning sessions, and maximum front-end stability when the pace quickens. This is a short circuit with a relatively low average speed, but the stress placed on the tyres in conjunction with high tyre wear means finding a good bike setup, as well as a riding style that uses the tyres most effectively are crucial to getting a decent result here.”

Following successful racing as Assen, Dunlop headed for a test at the Termas De Rio Hondo circuit in Argentina, a new track on the 2014 calendar. With the help of Esteve Rabat (Kalex) and Nicolas Terol (Suter) Dunlop was able to go through an intensive tyre test plan. In all, the riders were scheduled to test five front specifications and twelve rear specifications during the twelve hours available split between two days. Between both riders a total of 240 laps were completed and despite rain during day two 14 of the 17 tyres were evaluated. Both riders worked very hard and their feedback was excellent. Dunlop is now confident going to the new venue in 2014 with tyres capable of 25 to 30 laps confirmed by both riders.
Attention now turns to the Sachsenring, one of the most demanding circuits that Moto2 and Moto3 visit. With ten left hand turns and only three or arguably four right hand turns. For the Moto2 riders this requires Dunlop to allocate a special range of rear tyres. The extreme temperatures caused by all the left hand turns makes it almost impossible to offer anything other than asymmetric rear tyres. Rider allocation for the rear will be four ATR14 W919 and five ATR14 3838, both having asymmetric constructions to allow heat build up on the none working right side as well as a reducing heat build up on the working left side. The W919 offers a softer compound on the none-working side for when riders feel they need that extra bit of confidence going into cooler morning practices. These will both be accompanied by the 302 and 345 fronts which are now well known to the teams with four of each available per rider to allow for the many variables that can have an effect on front tyre performance.
For the Moto3 riders the ‘M’ and ‘H’ compound fronts accompanied by the ‘S’ and ‘M’ rears will be allocated. The target for these riders will be to hold on to as much tyre stability as possible, as front and rear tyre temperatures here will be the highest they will experience while in Europe. Both options of fronts and rears will give the riders confidence during the cooler practice and warm up sessions that the other classes do not have to encounter while also having the endurance needed for hotter race conditions.
Last year’s Moto2 race result gave Suter, Kalex and FTR chassis manufacturers each a place on the podium but with three different tyre combinations which is very satisfying for Dunlop. The same could be said for the Moto3 race where KTM, Honda and Kalex KTM all finished on the podium, albeit in wet conditions, so all finished on the same wet tyres.
Clinton Howe, Operations Manager Motorcycle Grand Prix:
“In recent races we have seen some variable ambient temperatures from extreme high temperatures in Catalunya to the windy cooler conditions of Assen. In both situations both classes of riders and teams have used all their knowledge in setting up their machines to get the very best out of them. In some cases tyre pressures have been lowered to gain that extra tenth of a second as a result of chasing grip for when the track has become slippery due to conditions.
“In Sachsenring the Dunlop service engineers will have their work cut out for them as they will have to police the tyre pressures with all teams to stop them going lower than the Dunlop recommended pressures as this circuit takes no prisoners where tyres are concerned! Last year’s results were very good and we have changed one of the rear specs from ATR03 to ATR14 which we hope will give the riders a harder choice of what to race, as both should perform very well.”
